How to Keep Your Little Shredders Warm and Cozy on the Slopes

Winter has arrived, and it’s time to hit the slopes with your little ones! While skiing with kids can be a magical experience, it's crucial to ensure they're warm, comfortable, and safe on the mountain. If they are having a good time, so are you.  With the right gear, a lot of patience, and a few helpful tips, you can transform your time on the mountain into a memorable adventure. So, bundle up your little shredders and get ready to conquer the slopes together!

 

Essential Gear for Little Skiers

  1. Base Layers:
    • Moisture-wicking fabrics: These materials draw sweat away from the skin, keeping your child dry and warm. Try to choose merino wool, bamboo, polyester or blends.
    • Thermal tops and bottoms: Provide extra insulation, perfect for colder days.
  2. Insulation Layers:
    • Fleece or warm sweaters: Offer excellent warmth and comfort but try to avoid sweater hoods as they usually get wet.
    • Insulated pants: Keep legs warm and protected from the elements.
  3. Outer Layers:
    • Waterproof and breathable jackets and pants: Shield your child from snow, wind, and rain.
    • Hoods with drawstrings: Keep heads warm and protected from the harsh mountain winds. Some jacket hoods are oversized to fit over helmets.
  4. Accessories:
    • Helmet: Protect heads and keep them warm and cozy.
    • Gloves or mittens: Protect hands from the cold.
    • Balaclava: Shield necks, cheeks and ears from the wind and cold. Since balaclavas are thin but surprisingly warm they can be worn under helmets, bulky touques should never be worn under helmets since they compromise the helmets safety features.
    • Goggles: Protect eyes from the sun, wind, and snow.
    • Ski socks: Keep feet warmer for longer as they wick moisture away.
    • Ski/ Board Harness: Using a harness is a great way to safely introduce your little one to the mountain. 

Tips for Keeping Little Ones Warm

  1. Layer Up: Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing weather conditions.
  2. Stay dry: Check for clothing dampness throughout the day.  Be sure to pull out boot liners at the end of the day because moisture builds up in-between the liner and shell. Dry them on a boot dryer, it also works great for drying gloves/mitts.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  4. Take Breaks: Schedule regular breaks in a warm lodge or cabin. Hot chocolate and a snack can do wonders to revive a cold and potentially grumpy child.
  5. Choose the Right Boots: Ensure boots fit properly and provide adequate warmth and support.
  6. Pack Extra Socks: Bring extra pairs of socks to keep feet dry and warm.
  7. Hand and Toe Warmers: Disposable hand and toe warmers can be a lifesaver on cold days. Keep a few in your jacket for emergencies.

By following these tips, and investing in quality gear you can ensure that your little ones have a safe and enjoyable experience on the hill. Remember, a happy and warm child will be looking forward to their next mountain adventure!
